Summary: Sign language is a very beautiful langauge in Arthur's eyes. De-anoning.

It was rare seeing a Nation using the language that used no spoken words, but used their hands and facial expressions. A fascinating language the Deaf have, it was like a dance of hands and fingers, a constant display of pure emotions upon one’s face. Yes, Arthur Kirkland loved this language for it was the only time he could honestly bring out his feelings. The Deaf did not judge him and, to be honest, he preferred being in the company of those silent people to his hearing citizenry.

So, when Arthur and the rest of the G8 had to go look for the very late American, they were surprised to find him in the lobby talking with five other people. Alfred’s hands were moving rhythmically and with purpose, each gesture fluid. His expression constantly changed, each sign forcing him to do that change. It was fascinating as the Nations just stood there, watching the dance without the notice of the speaking party despite how rude it was. Arthur had never seen such a beautiful usage of sign language before, only having been vaguely aware that Alfred knew it. He never knew the degree of fluency the American had, never knew that he could look so beautiful using the language of the Deaf.

They watched, silently, waiting patiently for them to finish, yet at the same time hoping that the beautiful dance would not stop. It did stop as Alfred waved his hands, explaining why he had to leave. They all smiled, some laughed, and they all waved good-bye, exiting the building while chatting amongst themselves. Alfred turned, a refreshing, beautiful, glorious grin lighting up his face as he walked toward the still-numb group.

“C’mon! We’ve got a meeting to start!” Alfred told them cheerfully, breaking the trance they were in. Sheepishly the others agreed and started walking back to the meeting room. However, Arthur stayed behind to walk with the American, wanting some private time with him.

So, you are fluent with using your hands to speak?” Arthur asked him, using his own sign language. He glanced into Alfred’s eyes, relying on his peripheral vision to guide him. Those blue eyes met his, an eyebrow raised and a smirk upon his face.

Would you like to find out tonight?” the American replied, returning to that dance of hands. Arthur tilted his head, pretending to think about it while keeping eye contact. He smiled, relaxing the lids of his eyes to about halfway.

But of course.

Notes

I'm just putting this here for those who don't know the language or Deaf culture all that well, kay?

Deaf and deaf, the difference: There is, in fact, a difference between "Deaf" and "deaf." Deaf with a capital "d" is a person who can't hear, but does not want to immerse themself into the hearing culture. They tend to stick to sign language and not things like pidgeon signing or lip reading. Deaf with a little "d" is the opposite.

Expressions: You need to use facial expressions because it's part of the grammar.

Eye contact: You need this. It's considered rude to break eye contact.

Watching or eavesdropping on two Deafs talking: Also considered rude if you just stare at them without telling them that you can use sign language.

*squeals quietly*

Even though this was short, this was just so touching. As someone who works around the deaf culture, who speaks it every day, it just warms my heart to know that the nations, being a part of their own people, do speak sign language.

What I found most fascinating was that Arthur and Alfred could speak with one another. X3 I hear British Sign Language is very different to American Sign Language. Perhaps all that time Alfred spent in England, he picked up a bit of British Signing. ;D

I loved this. Thank you so much for giving us such a sweet morsel. I love sign language and watching people speak it, and speaking it myself. Coming home at the end of the day makes me sad, because everyone around me is hearing.

Yay for Hetalia and Sign Language fans! <3

Sign Language isn't universal, different countries have different languages, and the American and English sign languages have no relation at all. ASL is a dialect based off of French sign language (which is why it's kinda hard to speak English and sign at the same time, because the syntax is so different). I know that England and Japan both have sign forms destinct from ASL and French, I haven't heard specifically about other coutries, but I think there's probably at least a few more out there. Some of the modifications between the French signing and ASL can be pretty funny, like in French the sign for woman is drawing the curve of a breast over yourself, but that was too bawdy for America, so it got switched to drawing bonet-strings for woman. Oh our Puritanical roots!

Oh wait, you noted that in a previous comment, my bad. Sorry for getting all talky there. I agree on the fact that the nations for the most part would all speak each other's languages pretty fluently, and after all, in the anime they didn't give the characters ethnic accents or anything.

I ran into a problem when I tried to take ASL in college because I'm dyslexic, and while I'm good at remembering and using the word-signs, I can't follow finger-spelling to save my life. So, I couldn't get past the begginer stages because the begginer stuff is pretty much all finger-spelling... Bleh... Now that I've finished up school I kind of want to try getting back into it studying at my own pace.

Oh, that sucks. I hope you get back into it! It's kinda weird, but I miss taking ASL. *only took two years of it in high school*
