Exactly. It's basically saying "It's still the special relationship but don't call it that." It's just like when Obama came into office and decided not to call it the "War on Terror" anymore. It's all politics and semantics. It's upsetting, a little if you take the sensationalist headline at face value, but hey, I bet we'll get some great fic out of it. *already formulating happy fic ideas about a more balanced relationship as opposed to Iggy being uke all the time*

I don't like how top!England typically tends to either be a pedo (do not want ever) or is practically raping America (also do not want ever), so while I prefer to write England on top, I like reading America on top more. :V Not to say I don't enjoy top!England when it doesn't fall into either of those aforementioned categories, because I totally do.

But in my happy fangirl mind, they have an equal relationship where they switch off without issues, because hey, if you're going to be with someone for centuries (because they so are, to hell with politics), you gotta mix up your sex life somehow.

The whole raping America only makes me associate with colonial!America, which I don't enjoy much to read because yeah. Their relationship would be more like brothers at that time rather than lover.

Oh, I'm well aware that there's some amazing UK/US fic out there, some of which rank way up there with my favorites, but the trend I've seen with top!England fics/art is that his motivation for sex with America isn't love, but wanting to dominate him, which just...turns me off. I like for their relationship to be about love, you know?

Yeah, I've seen pedo!England and abusive!England too, and it's all very much do not want. Then again, the abusive!England fics I've seen were AmericaxEngland only in name. :/

(See, for me, top/bottom has never really been about dominance. ^^;; I could never see switching as a requisite for an equal relationship... but of course that's just me. If someone thinks differently, I'm fine with that. :3 I'm just glad that the fandom is so large so there's fanstuff for everyone.)

I am also pretty sure I have seen the exact same sensationalist headline (or something very similar to it) more than a few times since Obama took office, and immediately afterward Obama and/or Brown usually issue a statement about the importance of the US-UK bond and blah dee blah. It goes in cycles, like any diplomatic relationship, but the United States and United Kingdom definitely haven't called it quits yet.

(And hey, as shippers, shouldn't we want them to have a more balanced and equal relationship most of the time?)
